MORE PEOPLE WITH SHOVELS NEEDED!

Speech by Stephen Cooksey (County Councillor) delivered to Press release on Mon 9th Feb 2009

The last week has illustrated very clearly what is wrong with the way that local government works. Dorking is governed by two Conservative-controlled Councils both with a significant cadre of highly-paid officials, yet six days after a heavy snowfall, many roads, paths and pavements remained uncleared and dangerous because no action had been taken to make them safe and useable.

Liberal Democrat councillors campaign to save Dorking Halls

Speech by Margaret Cooksey & Stephen Cooksey on behalf of Mole Valley Liberal Democrat councillors delivered to Press release on Sun 1st Feb 2009

Dorking's Liberal Democrat Councillors are campaigning hard against the cuts in funding for Dorking Halls proposed by the Conservative Executive in their 2009-2010 budget. Since the budget was first announced at Christmas we have been trying to find out from the Executive how it expected its proposed cut of £74,000 to affect the staffing and services provided at the Halls but to date the only response has been silence.

Executive pressed to reveal impact of budget cuts on services

Speech by Stephen Cooksey on behalf of Liberal Demcrat group on Mole Valley District Council delivered to Statement to press on Thu 29th Jan 2009

We now know about the disgraceful Conservative policies to raise car parking charges, reduce support for the CAB and make life more difficult for allotment holders which are manifest in the proposed Mole Valley budget. But alongside this the Tories are planning to make deep cuts in the budgets for Dorking Halls, Leisure Services and Parks & Open Spaces which are likely to have disastrous effects on what those services can provide. The Leisure Services budget and the Parks & Open Spaces budgets will each be cut by £70,000 and the Dorking Halls budget by £74,000 - massive cuts with massive consequences.

Oppose ID cards

Speech by Stephen Cooksey delivered to Surrey CC introducing the ID cards motion (extracts) on Tue 25th Nov 2008

The basis of this motion will not be unfamiliar to many members of this Council. It reflects policies adopted nationally by both the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives and similar motions that have already been approved by at least 3 Surrey Districts - Spelthorne, Mole Valley and Guildford -unanimously in each case. It is therefore important, in my view, for members of this Council to have the opportunity to add their support to what is in effect a national campaign by local government and to approve the consequent recommendations.
