Separately, Mole Valley District Council has initiated a formal Community Governance Review to consult on creating new Town or Parish Councils which might be able to take on any assets or services that may be under threat after the creation of the new unitary council.
Big changes are coming to local government in Surrey. The Labour government is replacing county, borough and district councils with ‘unitary councils’ covering our area - most likely the whole of East Surrey.
This could mean less control over important decisions that affect your community. The Liberal Democrats want to keep decision-making close to home, as we believe that existing Parish councils provide an important voice for local people in how their area is run and so new ones may be needed for currently unparished areas.
Neither the Conservatives running Surrey CC, nor the Labour Government, like the idea but in places like Dorking, Leatherhead and some of our villages that don't currently have town or parish councils, new ones could be created, with real powers to protect important community assets like libraries, allotments, war memorials and public toilets.
